The Times - 19 July 1872 ACCIDENTS to Turle and Witney, TwoBoys, Drowned at Taunton p.5 col.f
DROWNED. - A melancholy accident occurred on the banks of the river Tone, at Taunton, on Monday. Two lads, named Turle and Witney, were bathing at a spot called the Half-lock, when Turle, in attempting to reach the side fell back into the stream, and Witney, in trying to rescue him, was clasped and dragged down. A companion on the bank watched their dying struggles, but was powerless to effect a rescue. Within a quarter of a mile a lad named Dawe, while fishing at the same time, fell into deep water at the weir, and though an alarm was given instantly to the boat-keeper living close at hand no assistance was of avail. The three bodies were soon recovered, and at the inquest a verdict in accordance with these facts was returned. - Western Morning News
